The Space Trilogy. First American Editions, First Printings, in Original Dust Jackets
LEWIS, C. S. Out of the Silent Planet; Perelandra; That Hideous Strength: A Modern Fairy-Tale for Grown-Ups.
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1944–1946.
FIRST AMERICAN EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS. Three volumes, complete. Octavo (8vo.). 174 pp.; 238 pp.; 459 pp. Original publisher’s cloth, each volume retaining its original dust jacket.
All three volumes were published in New York by The Macmillan Company during the Second World War and immediate postwar period. Out of the Silent Planet is the First American Edition, first printing, 1944, in the second-state binding of the first printing, identified by the dash-dot-dash device beneath “Macmillan” on the spine. Perelandra is the First American Edition, first printing, 1944; with the War Economy Standards device on the copyright page.
That Hideous Strength: A Modern Fairy-Tale for Grown-Ups is the First American Edition, first printing, 1946.
Condition: Contents complete and generally clean, with a previous-owner inscription on a blank preliminary leaf in Perelandra, trivial foxing to the text-block edges, and mild, even toning most apparent on the endpapers. Bindings remain sound and square. Boards show light rubbing at the extremities; the spines show fading and occasional small stains.
All three original dust jackets are present. The front inner flaps of Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra are clipped at both upper and lower corners, though each retains the printed price of $2.00. The front inner flap of That Hideous Strength is detached but retained within its removable archival sleeve; its lower corner is price-clipped. The jackets exhibit moderate edge chipping, closed tears, rubbing, and small losses typical of these fragile jackets. A removable previous-owner label is affixed to the archival sleeve of Perelandra, not to the jacket itself.
A scarce complete set of the First American Editions, first printings of Lewis’s landmark Space Trilogy, all three volumes retaining their original American dust jackets.
