WELLS, H. G. The First Men in the Moon. Indianapolis: The Bowen-Merrill Company, 1901.

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, first printing sheets, later issue in Grosset & Dunlap binding. Octavo (8vo), 312 pp. Publisher’s blue-gray vertically ribbed cloth, decoratively stamped in gilt and blind, with Grosset & Dunlap at the foot of the spine. Illustrated with a tissue-guarded frontispiece and eleven additional plates by E. Hering. Title page printed in red and black.

A documented issue comprising sheets of the first American printing subsequently bound for Grosset & Dunlap. Currey specifically records first-printing Bowen-Merrill sheets in this later Grosset & Dunlap binding. An uncommon bibliographical variant of Wells’s influential lunar romance, one of the foundational works of modern science fiction.

Contents clean and bright, with a neat prior ownership inscription to the half-title; all illustrations present. Binding remains sound and square, hinges firm. Gilt remains visible though gently softened with age; light general handling wear. A Very Good copy.
