First Edition Thus. Autograph Edition. Thirty volumes, complete. Octavo (8vo). Uniformly bound in three-quarter maroon morocco over marbled boards, the spines gilt-tooled with raised bands, gilt turn-ins and dentelles, marbled endpapers, and top edges gilt; fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Illustrated throughout with frontispieces, engraved vignette title pages, and plates by Hablot Knight Browne (“Phiz”), George Cruikshank, Marcus Stone, Frederick Barnard, Luke Fildes, George Cattermole, John Leech, John Tenniel, Daniel Maclise, Clarkson Stanfield, Richard Doyle, and others. Tissue guards present to the frontispieces.

Edited by Richard Garnett, Keeper of Printed Books at the British Museum. This substantial illustrated edition presents Dickens’s major novels, shorter fiction, Christmas writings, and miscellaneous works, including The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, Bleak House, Little Dorrit, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Our Mutual Friend, and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Contents clean and unmarked, with several volumes retaining unopened leaves. Bindings remain sound and firm. Most volumes show only light shelf wear and gently bumped corners; several have chipping and wear at the spine heads and tails, with occasional darkening to the leather at the spine tails. Gilt remains attractive across the set. A handsome Very Good thirty-volume Autograph Edition.
