Publisher’s original salmon-red cloth, elaborately decorated in black to the boards and spine and lettered in gilt; all edges gilt; decorative endpapers. Illustrated with 40 full-page drawings by Hugh Thomson, including a tissue-guarded frontispiece. With an introduction by Austin Dobson.

An attractive turn-of-the-century edition preserving Hugh Thomson’s celebrated illustrations for Austen’s final two novels. Thomson’s illustrations for Jane Austen became among the defining visual interpretations of her works at the end of the nineteenth century.

Contents generally clean and unmarked, with light, even toning; scattered foxing to the endpapers and frontispiece tissue guard. Binding remains sound and firm, with a slight lean. Cloth shows light rubbing and shelf wear at the extremities, with mild fading to the spine; gilt edges remain bright. A Very Good copy.
