THACKERAY, William Makepeace. The History of Henry Esmond, Esq., a Colonel in the Service of Her Majesty Queen Anne, Written by Himself. London: Macmillan and Co., 1905.

First Edition thus. Octavo (8vo). Original green cloth decoratively stamped in gilt to spine and upper board, all edges gilt. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson with numerous in-text drawings throughout.

Contents clean and bright throughout with occasional light spotting to a few page margins and a neat contemporary previous owner’s cursive signature to the front free endpaper. Binding sound and secure with light wear to spine ends and corners, minor marking and rubbing to the rear board, and slight rubbing to the spine tips. Gilt stamping to the front board and spine remains bright and unworn. Overall, a well-preserved Very Good+ copy.

Henry Esmond stands apart within Thackeray’s fiction for its unusually restrained historical voice and its careful recreation of early eighteenth-century England during the reign of Queen Anne. Written in the form of a memoir, the novel blends political history, military life, and psychological introspection in a manner that deeply influenced later historical fiction. Originally published in 1852, this illustrated Macmillan edition reflects the Edwardian revival of richly produced Victorian classics, while Hugh Thomson’s delicate line drawings, celebrated for their elegance and period sensitivity, complement the novel’s atmosphere of nostalgia and fading aristocratic culture.
