First American Edition, Second Impression, with “Published March, 1902, R” on the copyright page. Octavo (8vo), 249 pp., followed by eight pages of publisher’s advertisements. Original publisher’s brick-red cloth, lettered and decorated in white on the front board and spine. Frontispiece and illustrated throughout by Sidney Paget.

The first American book edition of Conan Doyle’s most celebrated Sherlock Holmes novel, following its serial appearance in The Strand Magazine from 1901 to 1902. This second impression retains the March 1902 publication statement with the added “R” on the copyright page.

Contents clean with light, even toning; previous owner’s signature to front free endpaper, with additional pencil notation and bookseller’s ticket of W. B. Clarke Co., Boston. Binding remains sound with a slight forward lean. Cloth rubbed and mottled, more noticeably to the rear board; spine dulled, with rubbing and scuffing to spine ends, joints, corners, and lower front board.

Provenance: From the Sherlock Holmes collection of Lawrence P. Dodge, assembled beginning in the early 1930s and acquired directly from Dodge descendants. Part of a long-held Sherlockian library containing early Doyle editions and classic works of Holmes scholarship.
