THACKERAY, William Makepeace. The Works of William Makepeace Thackeray: The History of Pendennis. London: Smith, Elder & Co.; Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co., 1901.

First Edition thus. Octavo (8vo). Two volumes, complete. Finely bound in three-quarter morocco over marbled boards, raised bands, richly gilt-decorated spines, marbled endpapers, and top edges gilt. Illustrated throughout with plates and text engravings. Silk ribbon markers retained.

A handsome two-volume set of Thackeray’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age novel, following young Arthur Pendennis from provincial romantic illusion and youthful literary ambition into the sharper world of London journalism, society, courtship, and class aspiration. One of Thackeray’s central social novels, Pendennis offers a richly satirical portrait of vanity, gentility, and the compromises by which a young man is shaped into a Victorian gentleman.

Contents clean, unmarked, and fresh, with numerous unopened gatherings, reflecting light handling and unread portions. Contemporary owner bookplates to front pastedowns. Bindings remain sound and square. Boards and extremities with light rubbing. A bright gilt set in Near Fine condition.

Uniform volumes from the same set are available separately. Additional photos upon request and gladly.
