Original publisher's leather binding with gilt-decorated spine.Illustrated throughout with over 500 engravings and portraits, including the frontispiece portrait of George Washington, the Declaration of Independence, and numerous folding and multi-panel plates. 

Contents complete and generally clean with moderate age toning and scattered foxing. Original marbled front free endpaper lacking. Lower fore-edge corner of the text block exhibits historical rodent damage with associated marginal loss, confined to the blank margins and not affecting printed text or illustrations. Occasional edge wear and closed tears. Binding remains intact and serviceable, though heavily worn, rubbed, and peeling, particularly along the spine and joints. A Fair copy suitable for restoration or reading use in its present state.

Published to commemorate the United States Centennial, this substantial nineteenth-century history surveys American history from early exploration through the Revolutionary period, westward expansion, the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Centennial Exhibition of 1876 in Philadelphia.
